Signs Your Gas Hob Needs Replacing
Gas hobs are durable, but they don’t last forever. Here are the common signs it’s time for a new one:
- Burners won’t light – If one or more burners fail to ignite, or you need multiple attempts to get a flame, the ignition system or gas valve may be failing.
- Uneven or weak flames – Yellow or orange flames, or flames that sit unevenly around the burner, can indicate blocked ports, worn burner caps, or a deeper gas supply issue.
- Gas smell when the hob is off – If you can smell gas when the hob isn’t in use, there may be a leak in the valve or connection. Turn off the gas at the meter and call a gasfitter immediately.
- Cracked or damaged cooktop – Physical damage to the glass or enamel surface can be a safety hazard and usually means the whole unit needs replacing.
- Knobs or controls not working – If the control knobs are stiff, loose, or no longer turning the gas on and off properly, replacement parts may not be available for older models.
- The hob is 15+ years old – Older hobs may still work, but safety standards have improved significantly. A modern hob will be safer, more efficient, and easier to clean.
If your hob is showing one issue, a repair might be possible. If it’s showing several, or it’s an older model where parts are hard to source, replacement is usually the better option.
What's Involved in a Gas Hob Replacement?
A like-for-like califont replacement is one of the most straightforward gas fitting jobs:
Disconnect the old hob
We safely disconnect the gas supply to the existing cooktop and remove it from the benchtop.
Check the gas connection
Before installing the new hob, we inspect the existing gas line, valve, and bayonet fitting to make sure everything is in good condition and compatible with the new unit.
Install the new hob
The new cooktop is fitted into the benchtop cutout, connected to the gas supply, and secured in place.
Adjust for gas type
If you’re changing between natural gas and LPG (or the new hob needs different gas jets), we fit the correct jets and adjust the regulator.
Test every burner
We test each burner for correct ignition, flame pattern, and gas flow. We also leak-test all connections.
Issue your compliance certificate
A Gas Safety Certificate (GSC) is issued on completion. Legally required for all gas fitting work in NZ.
A standard hob swap where the cutout size matches and the gas connection is already in place can usually be completed in 1-2 hours. If the cutout needs modifying or the gas line needs adjusting, allow 2-4 hours.
Replacing With a Different Gas Type
If you’re changing your gas supply, for example disconnecting from town gas and switching to LPG bottles, your existing hob may need to be converted or replaced entirely.
Natural gas to LPG
Many hobs can be converted by swapping the gas jets and adjusting the regulator. We check whether your specific model has a conversion kit available. If it does, we carry out the conversion as part of the replacement job. If not, a new LPG-compatible hob is the way to go.
LPG to natural gas
Less common, but the same process applies in reverse. We swap the jets and adjust the regulator, or install a new unit if conversion isn’t possible.
If you’re coming off town gas supply entirely as part of a hot water heat pump conversion, we can handle the hob conversion or replacement alongside that work. See our gas to heat pump conversion page for more detail.
Does Citywide Supply the Hob?
We can supply a new gas hob if needed, or we’re happy to install one you’ve already purchased. If you’re buying your own, a few things to check before purchasing:
- Gas type – Make sure the hob matches your gas supply (natural gas or LPG). This is the most common mistake homeowners make when buying a hob online.
- Cutout size – Measure the existing cutout in your benchtop. If the new hob has a different cutout size, the benchtop may need modifying, which adds time and cost.
- Number of burners – Most standard hobs are 4-burner (60cm) or 5-burner (90cm). Make sure the new unit fits your benchtop space.
If you’re unsure what to buy, give us a call before purchasing and we can advise on the right hob for your setup.
