Gas to Hot Water Heat Pump Conversion Auckland
Come Off Town Gas and Start Saving
4.9 from 165 reviews
Gas prices in New Zealand are rising, and the fixed daily line charges alone can add up to a significant amount each year, whether you use the gas or not. More Auckland homeowners are making the switch from gas hot water to electric hot water heat pumps, and Citywide Plumbing & Pumps handles the gas side of the conversion from start to finish.
We remove your gas hot water system, convert or replace your kitchen hob, disconnect the gas supply, and issue all the required compliance certificates.

Why Are Homeowners Switching Off Gas?
The shift from gas to electric heat pump hot water is picking up across Auckland, and it’s largely driven by cost:
- Rising gas line charges – Fixed daily charges for being connected to the gas network have increased significantly. Many households are paying a substantial monthly fee just for the connection, before any gas is used.
- Heat pumps are cheaper to run – A hot water heat pump uses around a third of the energy of a traditional electric cylinder and is significantly cheaper to run than gas. The savings on running costs plus eliminating the gas line charges can add up quickly.
- No more gas bottles – For LPG users, switching to a heat pump means no more bottle deliveries, no more running out of gas unexpectedly, and no more bottle rental fees.
- Future-proofing – As New Zealand moves toward electrification, being on an all-electric home setup positions you well for solar panels and other renewable energy options down the track.
- Environmental benefits – Heat pumps produce significantly lower emissions than gas systems, particularly when powered by NZ’s largely renewable electricity grid.
What's Involved in the Conversion?
A gas-to-heat-pump conversion involves several trades working together. As your certified gasfitters, we handle all the gas work:
Califont or Gas Cylinder Removal
We safely disconnect and remove your existing gas hot water unit, whether it’s a continuous flow califont or a gas storage cylinder like the Rheem Stellar. The gas line to the unit is capped and tested.
Heat Pump Installation Coordination
We work alongside your heat pump installer (or can recommend one) to make sure the timing works and there’s minimal downtime without hot water. The heat pump installer handles the new unit, the electrical connection, and the water plumbing. We handle everything on the gas side.
Kitchen Hob Conversion or Replacement
If your kitchen hob runs on natural gas, you have two options:
- Convert to LPG – We swap the gas jets, install an LPG bottle and regulator outside the property, and reconnect your hob. You keep cooking on gas without the town gas connection.
- Replace with electric or induction – We disconnect the gas to the hob, cap the line, and issue the compliance certificate. An electrician then installs the power supply for the new cooktop.
Most homeowners who want to keep cooking on gas go with the LPG conversion. It’s a straightforward job and means you only need one LPG bottle for the hob rather than paying monthly line charges for the entire gas network connection.
Gas Disconnection
Once all gas appliances have been removed or converted to LPG, we cap the gas line at the meter. You then contact your gas retailer to close the account and arrange meter removal. We provide the compliance certificates your retailer will need to process the disconnection.
Compliance Certificates
Every stage of the gas work is certified. We issue a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) and Gas Safety Certificate (GSC) for the removal work, the hob conversion (if applicable), and the final gas disconnection. These are legally required and important for your insurance records.
A standard hob swap where the cutout size matches and the gas connection is already in place can usually be completed in 1-2 hours. If the cutout needs modifying or the gas line needs adjusting, allow 2-4 hours.
What Does It Cost to Disconnect From Gas?
The total cost depends on how many gas appliances you have and what work is involved. The main cost components are:
- Califont or cylinder removal and gas capping – The gasfitting work to safely disconnect your hot water system.
- Hob conversion to LPG – If you want to keep cooking on gas. Includes jet swap, LPG bottle, regulator, and line work.
- Or hob disconnection – If you’re going fully electric. Simpler job, just disconnecting and capping.
- Gas retailer disconnection fee – Your gas company will charge a fee to disconnect the meter. This varies by retailer but is typically a one-off charge.
- Heat pump unit and installation – This is handled by the heat pump installer, not us, but it’s the largest single cost in the conversion.
