Continuous Flow Hot Water

Why Choose A Califont?

A califont (continuous flow gas hot water heater) heats water on demand as it flows through the unit. There’s no storage tank, no standby heat loss, and no running out of hot water mid-shower.

  • Endless hot water – Heats continuously, so you’ll never run out. No more timing showers around the rest of the household.
  • Energy efficient – You only pay to heat the water you actually use. No tank burning gas all day keeping water warm.
  • Compact – Mounts on an external wall and takes up almost no space compared to a traditional cylinder.
  • Long lasting – A well-maintained califont typically lasts 10 to 15 years, with quality brands like Rinnai and Rheem often running trouble-free for even longer.
  • LPG and natural gas compatible – Whether you’re on town gas or LPG bottles, we install califonts to suit.

We supply and install New Zealand’s leading continuous flow gas hot water brands.

Rinnai Infinity

New Zealand’s most popular continuous flow brand. Known for reliability, energy efficiency, and consistent water temperature even when multiple taps are running. Available in a range of sizes from 16-litre units through to the 26-litre models that handle large households with ease.

Best for: Families, larger households, homes with multiple bathrooms.

Rheem Integrity

Best for: Budget-conscious homeowners, smaller to mid-sized households.

What's Involved In A Califont Installation?

A califont installation involves gas, plumbing, and electrical work, all of which need to be done to code. Here’s what the process looks like:

1

Site assessment

We check your gas supply type, water pressure, ventilation clearances, and the best mounting location for the unit.

2

Choosing the right unit

Based on your household size, number of bathrooms, and hot water usage, we recommend the right brand and model.

3

Installation

We connect gas, water, and electrical (most califonts need a standard power point for ignition and controls), then test the full system before signing off.

4

Compliance certificates

We issue a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) and Gas Safety Certificate (GSC) on completion. Every job, no exceptions.

A straightforward replacement can usually be completed in 3 to 4 hours. New installations where gas lines need to be run can take a full day.

Common Units We Replace

Our gasfitters regularly replace older califonts that have reached end of life, including:

If your unit is on this list or a similar model from the same era, it may be nearing the end of its useful life. We can assess whether a repair or full replacement is the better option.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a califont installation cost?
The cost depends on the brand and model, the complexity of the installation, and whether additional gas line or electrical work is needed. Contact us for a free quote, we'll assess your setup and provide a clear price before any work starts.
Can I upgrade from a hot water cylinder to a califont?
Yes, this is one of the most common jobs we do. We remove the old cylinder, run gas and water lines to the new califont location, and install the new unit. Your taps and shower may operate at different pressure afterwards, which we'll talk you through before the work starts.
What size califont do I need?
As a general guide: a 16-litre unit suits a small home with one bathroom. A 20-litre unit works for 2 to 3 people. A 26-litre unit is recommended for larger families or homes with two or more bathrooms.
Will a califont work during a power cut?
No. Modern califonts use electronic ignition that requires electricity. If you experience frequent power outages, this is worth considering when choosing your hot water system.
