Califont Installation & Replacement

A califont (continuous flow gas hot water heater) is one of the most popular hot water solutions in New Zealand homes. Whether you’re installing a brand new unit or replacing an ageing califont that’s no longer performing, our certified gasfitters ensure the job is done safely, efficiently, and fully compliant with current NZ gas regulations.

We handle everything, removing the old unit, installing the new califont, connecting gas and water lines, and issuing your gas compliance certificate on completion.

If your existing califont is more than 10 to 15 years old, running inefficiently, producing lukewarm water, or making unusual noises, it’s likely time for a replacement. We’ll assess your current setup, recommend the right unit for your household size and water usage, and complete the installation in a single visit where possible.

All Major Brands

Brands We Install

We supply and install New Zealand’s leading gas hot water brands.

Rinnai Infinity

New Zealand’s most popular continuous flow range. Energy-efficient, compact, and available in a range of sizes to suit any household.

Rheem Stellar

Premium performance with advanced temperature control and built-in frost protection.

Rheem Integrity

A reliable mid-range option with strong energy efficiency ratings and consistent hot water delivery.

Common Units We Replace

Our gasfitters regularly replace older and end-of-life califont models, including:

If your unit is on this list (or similar), it may be nearing the end of its service life. We can assess its condition and recommend whether a repair or full replacement is the better option.

Gas Hot Water Cylinder Replacement

Still running an old gas hot water cylinder? Traditional storage cylinders lose heat constantly and cost more to run than modern alternatives. If your cylinder is leaking, rusting at the base, running out of hot water faster than it used to, or simply past its lifespan, it’s time for a replacement.

We remove and dispose of your old cylinder and install a suitable replacement, whether that’s a new gas storage cylinder or an upgrade to a continuous flow califont system. Our gasfitters will talk you through the options based on your household’s hot water demand, available space, and budget.

Every cylinder replacement includes full gas compliance certification.

Kitchen Hob Installation & Replacement

A gas hob is one of the most used appliances in the kitchen, and proper installation is essential for both safety and performance. Whether you’re fitting a gas hob into a new kitchen or replacing an old cooktop, our certified gasfitters ensure your hob is connected correctly, tested, and certified.

We install gas hobs in new builds, renovations, and existing kitchens. If you’re replacing an old hob, we disconnect and remove the existing unit, fit the new cooktop, and test the gas connection and ignition before signing off with a gas compliance certificate.

If you’re converting from an electric cooktop to gas, we can run the gas line to your kitchen and install the hob as part of the same job.

Natural Gas To LPG Conversion

Thinking about disconnecting from town gas supply but want to keep cooking on gas? We convert kitchen hobs and other gas appliances from natural gas (town supply) to LPG (bottled gas).

This is an increasingly popular option for Auckland homeowners who are switching their hot water to an electric heat pump but don’t want to give up the benefits of gas cooking. By converting your hob to LPG, you can ditch the monthly gas line charges while keeping the instant heat control that gas cooktops are known for.

The conversion involves fitting the correct LPG gas jets for your specific hob model, installing the LPG bottle and regulator setup, and testing the full system. Most major hob manufacturers supply conversion kits to switch between gas types, so in most cases your existing cooktop can be converted rather than replaced.

We also handle full appliance replacements if your current hob isn’t compatible with LPG conversion.

Gas To Hot Water Heat Pump Conversion

Gas prices in New Zealand are rising, and more Auckland homeowners are making the switch from gas hot water to electric hot water heat pumps. If you’re ready to come off town gas supply, Citywide handles the full conversion process.

1

Califont or gas cylinder removal

We safely disconnect and remove your existing gas hot water unit.

2

Heat pump installation

We supply and install a hot water heat pump cylinder to replace your gas water heater, and we complete the electrical connection too, so the whole job is handled by one team.

3

Kitchen hob conversion

If your hob runs on natural gas, we can convert it to LPG bottled gas so you keep cooking on gas, or replace it with an electric or induction cooktop if you want to go fully electric.

4

Gas disconnection

Once all gas appliances are removed or converted, we cap the gas line at the meter so you can contact your gas supplier to close the account.

5

Compliance certificates

Every stage of your electrical, gas and plumbing is certified.

Going off town gas can save you hundreds of dollars a year in line charges alone, on top of the energy savings from a heat pump. We’ll walk you through the full process and make sure nothing gets missed.

Gas Compliance Certificates With Every Job

Under New Zealand law, all gas fitting work must be carried out by a licensed gasfitter and certified on completion. At Citywide Plumbing & Pumps, we issue the required gas compliance certificates with every job, no exceptions.

Certificate of Compliance (CoC)

Confirms what gas fitting work was completed, who carried it out, and that it meets NZ safety standards. Required for all general and high-risk gas fitting work, and the job isn’t legally complete without one.

Gas Safety Certificate (GSC)

Issued once the work is connected and operational, confirming the installation is safe to use and hasn’t adversely affected any other part of the gas system.

These certificates are important for your records. If you ever sell your home, make an insurance claim, or have a gas-related incident, you may be asked to produce them. Without valid certificates, your insurance company may not cover the claim.

Our gasfitters hold current Certifying Gas Fitter practising licences issued by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB). You can verify any gasfitter’s licence on the PGDB register.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a certified gasfitter for gas work?
Yes. Under New Zealand law, all gas fitting work must be performed by a person who holds a current practising licence issued by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. It's illegal to carry out your own gas fitting work, and doing so puts your household at risk and may void your insurance.
What is a gas compliance certificate?
A gas compliance certificate is a legal document confirming that gas work has been completed safely and to the required NZ standards. It includes a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) and a Gas Safety Certificate (GSC). Your gasfitter must issue these after completing any gas fitting work.
Can I convert my gas hob from natural gas to LPG?
In most cases, yes. Most gas hob manufacturers supply conversion kits that allow your existing cooktop to be switched from natural gas to LPG. Our gasfitters can assess your specific model and carry out the conversion, including setting up the LPG bottle and regulator.
How do I disconnect from town gas supply?
If you're switching your hot water to a heat pump and converting or replacing your gas hob, you can come off the town gas network entirely. We remove or convert all gas appliances, cap the gas line at the meter, and issue compliance certificates for the work. You then contact your gas supplier to close the account and arrange meter removal.
How much does a califont installation cost?
The cost depends on the brand and model of the unit, the complexity of the installation, and whether additional gas or water line work is needed. Contact us for a free quote, we'll assess your setup and provide a clear price before any work starts.
How long does a califont last?
Most califonts have a lifespan of around 10 to 15 years depending on usage, water quality, and maintenance. If your unit is reaching that age and showing signs of declining performance, it's worth having it assessed.
