There’s a reason professional chefs prefer gas. For home cooks, a gas hob offers real advantages over electric and ceramic cooktops:

Instant heat control – Gas responds immediately when you turn the dial up or down. No waiting for elements to heat up or cool down.
Even heat distribution – The flame wraps around the base of the pan, distributing heat more evenly than a flat electric element.
Works during power cuts – A gas hob with manual ignition will still work when the power goes out. Handy in Auckland’s storm season.

Types of Gas Hob Installation

Not every hob install is the same. Here are the most common scenarios we handle:

New Build Installation

Your builder or kitchen company has the hob ready, and we connect it to the gas supply. This is the most straightforward type of installation, as the gas line is usually already roughed in during the build. We connect, test, and certify.

Renovation Installation

Kitchen renovations often involve moving the hob to a new location or upgrading from an older cooktop. If the gas line needs to be extended or rerouted to the new position, we handle that as part of the job.

Electric to Gas Conversion

Switching from an electric cooktop to gas? We run a new gas line from your existing gas meter to the kitchen, install the hob, and certify the work. If your home doesn’t have a gas supply, we can set up an LPG bottle system externally and run the line from there.

LPG Bottle Setup

For homes not connected to town gas, we install the LPG bottle and regulator outside the property and run the gas line to your kitchen. This is a common setup for rural properties, lifestyle blocks, and homes that have disconnected from the gas network.

What's Involved in a Gas Hob Installation?

A like-for-like califont replacement is one of the most straightforward gas fitting jobs:

Site assessment

We check your existing gas supply, the hob location, and what gas line work is needed. We also check clearances and ventilation requirements.

Gas line work

If there’s no existing gas connection at the cooktop location, we run a new gas line from the meter or LPG bottles to the kitchen. In older homes, this often means running the line through the subfloor or along the exterior wall.

Hob connection

We connect the hob to the gas supply, set the correct gas pressure, and adjust the burners for your specific gas type (natural gas or LPG).

Testing

We test every burner for correct flame pattern, ignition, and gas flow. We also check for leaks across all connections.

Compliance certificate

A Gas Safety Certificate (GSC) is issued on completion. This is legally required for all gas hob installations in New Zealand and confirms the work has been tested and is safe to use.

Most hob installations where a gas line already exists can be completed in 2-3 hours. If a new gas line needs to be run, allow half a day to a full day depending on the complexity.

Gas Compliance Certificates

Under New Zealand law, all gas fitting work must be completed by a certified gasfitter and a Gas Safety Certificate must be issued on completion. This applies to every gas hob installation, whether it’s a new build, renovation, or simple swap.

The certificate confirms your installation has been tested, is safe, and meets NZ standards. Keep it with your property records, as it may be required for insurance claims or when selling your home.

We had a fault with our waste water pump and the control switch and called a number of plumbers, all of whom referred us to Citywide Plumbing. They were on the scene within 20 minutes and had given us a breakdown of what went wrong and how they'd fix it. They provided a quote the next day and helped us work with our insurance. Once the parts had arrived Sean got to work and did an excellent job helping us get our plumbing in order. Josh and Sean were a pleasure to deal with from the get go and were professional, courteous and were very knowledgeable - making them an expert in what they do. Pump started making some noise, I ignored it for a couple of weeks and the organised the team to come and look at it a couple days later. Pump died completely that evening, they came out the following morning to rescue us with a loan pump. Took a look at the old one and showed it was done, installed a new one for me. Can I install a gas hob myself?

No. All gas fitting work in New Zealand must be carried out by a certified gasfitter. It's illegal to do your own gas connections, and doing so puts your household at risk and may void your insurance.

How much does a gas hob installation cost?

It depends on whether there's an existing gas line to the kitchen, the length of any new gas line needed, and the complexity of the installation. Contact us for a free quote.

Can I convert my electric cooktop to gas?

Yes. We run a new gas line to the kitchen and install the gas hob. If your home has no gas supply at all, we can set up an LPG bottle system. This is a common job for us.

Do you supply the hob as well?

We can supply a hob if needed, or we're happy to install one you've purchased yourself. Just make sure it's compatible with your gas type (natural gas or LPG) before buying.

What gas type does my hob need?

If your home is connected to the town gas network, you need a natural gas hob. If you're running LPG bottles, you need an LPG hob. Some hobs come with conversion kits for switching between the two. We can advise on the right option for your setup.
